History

Kiryu was born to a middle class family in San Francisco 1966. He was energetic and outgoing, joining the cub scouts and little league baseball. He was also an easily provoked kid, and got kicked out of the league for trying to knock out the other team’s batter with his bat. Although he lost his uniform, he kept the bat, and kept it for decades to come. With his time more fully devoted to the scouts, he channeled his competitive streak into the Pinewood Derby, finely crafting the best possible wooden car. He proceeded to lose to someone who stuck weights on their car, and promptly quit the cub scouts and went to where all spurned youths went: Business school.

He was fairly successful at school, and went straight from graduation into opening his own business, a small bar. Despite how stupid that is, he actually succeeded, and the bar would remain profitable for decades, even as he took another job and refused to hire any employees–apart from his wife. His best friend from school was the only other person who he allowed to help with his business, and his friend proved helpful when Kiryu was contacted about a new job. The Venture Clan had taken notice of him, and brought him in for a round of interviews (hazing). They determined that he was a good fit, and inducted him–via bite–into the clan in 1991. He was initially taken into a middle-management position, which he split with his continued work as a barkeep.

Then tragedy struck. His best friend was killed by an unhinged cryptobro crazed on a cocaine binge. He avenged his friend, and beat the man to death with his favourite bat. This act would draw the attention of Mark Sterner, who promoted him to personal bodyguard, finally recognizing his combat talent. In this mourning period, he temporarily closed down the bar. Ironically, this is how he met his wife, who was a frequent patron of the bar, and contacted to see why it had closed. He reopened it for her, and the two spoke privately over drinks for the rest of the night. These meetings continued, and the two fell in love. Even though they were soon married, he never told her about his undead nature, a secret he continues to grapple with–and hide behind a litany of fake medical conditions. He also keeps her secret from the Venture Clan of course, and strictly separates his business life (The Clan) from his personal–and also somewhat business–life (The bar).

Now he spends his life jumping between his human world: A peaceful life as a bartender with a loving wife and a healthy spread of eccentricities, and his vampiric life: serving as the bat-wielding bodyguard to Mark Sterner and spending his free time hunting down deranged cryptobros in the dead of night (his preferred meal, despite the aftertaste of white powder). He has a collection of expensive–looking–suits, and an even greater collection of personally modified Hotwheels, an obsession carried over from his shameful departure from the cub scouts.
